Progression in Scientific Enquiry

In addition to the overarching issues of ideas and evidence we identify 4 skill areas for scientific enquiry at Key Stage 3. These are planning, obtaining and presenting evidence, considering evidence and evaluating. Each of these areas requires the development of a number of skills at varying levels of demand. In order to ensure the effective teaching of these skills it is necessary to plan for their progressive introduction and reinforcement during the course of the key stage. Whilst it's not possible to provide a generic plan for the development of scientific enquiry throughout Key stage 3 we hope to provide useful materials can provide some tips and guidance on this page.

Planning Posters

These posters have proven to be one of the most popular features of the Science strand of the Key Stage 3 Strategy. 'Planning posters' is actually something of a misnomer as there are three posters aimed at providing a frame for class discussion in Scientific enquiry and only one of these is actually focused on the process of identifying and manipulating key variables. Electronic copies of the posters can be downloaded below along with an instruction sheet/ script that we recommend you read carefully before trying out the technique with your class. .
