The New CurriculumWe await further details on KS3 2008 but for now, QCA have published the Programme of Study which can be found here: We will keep you up-to-date via the Herts-Sci-Net email lists as the year progresses. Ideas for Teaching the Behaviour Strand NewBehaviour appears as a new strand of Yearly Learning Objectives in the 2008 Science Framework. The Norfolk Science Strategy Consultants have produced a booklet which gives you lesson ideas for teaching Plant, Animal and Human Behaviour. KS3: Section 3 - Plant BehaviourIncludes lesson plans and resources
KS3: Section 1-2 - Science Teaching Animal, Human and Plant BehaviourIncludes lesson plans and resources
As you will see, the documents must have taken a huge amount of time to produce and we are enormously grateful to the authors (Adrian Tebbutt, David Glenn and Mike Land) for sharing them so widely and allowing us to distribute them. Find more on their web pages: 2008 Planner & File Finder NewScience KS3 2008 Planner and File Finder This spreadsheet has links to 261 files produced by the strategy over the years, all just one click away from the main spreadsheet. The main spreadsheet is an attempt to fit How Science Works and Range and Content from the new Framework into the old QCA schemes. The sheet is far from being finished but may be a starting point for many schools when they are beginning to write their new KS3 curriculum. Download zip fileThis file is large and may take a while to download, please be patient!
Remember to Enable Macros when you start the Excel spreadsheet. If you need help with this then see the ReadMe file. Science KS3 2008 Curriculum Developer UpdatedThis spreadsheet provides an overview of the new framework and enables teachers to easily fit How Science Works and Range and Content objectives from the new framework into new topics as they see fit. You can start off by simply using your old content and looking for HSW coverage. Alternatively you may want to completely re-write your whole KS3 curriculum and this sheet helps you to ensure coverage of all the Framework objectives using the counters at the bottom. At the start of May we had a range of sheets to cope with two-year and three-year Key Stages and ones which included SEAL and PLTS objectives. We have now rationalised all of these sheets into one spreadsheet which should be even easier to use and will provide for medium and short term planning. The sheet has got the updated objectives from the Framework which was published on 7th May 2008 on the Strategy’s website: The sheet also includes PLTS and SEAL objectives and now has a new Audit Tool so that you can check progression in each of the Yearly Learning Objectives (see instructions tab when you open the spreadsheet for further details). Remember to Enable Macros when you start the Excel spreadsheet. If you receive a message saying that your security level is too high then carry on to open Excel, go to the Tools Menu>Macros>Security and select Medium. Save and close Excel and when you re-open you will get the choice to Enable Macros which you should accept. For the very adventurous you may want to configure the associated Word Document which is a lesson plan which is set up to Mail Merge from the main sheet to produce lesson plans with objectives ready to go. Please note: For those of you who started working with the previous tools, the objectives have only changed slightly and you may want to continue using them as you are. However, if you want to use the new tool with updated objectives then cutting and pasting your work across into the new Tool should not be too time-consuming.
Science Curriculum Working GroupA curriculum working group was convened with the following aims:
When writing their sequences of lessons they considered the approaches departments might take:
Examplar SOW
Alternative ApproachesAlternative Approaches departments have taken: We have been working with one school on a thematic curriculum for Science that may spread across the whole school. Choosing broad themes such as ‘Chocolate’ we are exploring ways to engage students with teaching content and skills against a particular backdrop. Chocolate may include using white and dark chocolate to look at Conduction, Convection and Radiation and Materials as well as the more obvious Diet/Food topics. Another school wishes to condense KS3 into two years. This has required them to be very decisive about which content to remove (although they found that there is a lot of repetition from KS2). This project presents real challenges as the school needs to adequately cover the HSW objectives and the content objectives in such a short space of time. They are still considering whether to enter the students for SATS at the end of Year 8 or in Year 9. We would love to hear from any other schools that are willing to share their ideas and ideas on developing a new scheme of work for the new KS3 programme of study.
