Concept Cartoons Competition

The special celebration day for the competition was held on 3 July. The following schools were the Winning Schools:

Competition Overview

Get your Year 4-8 pupils to carry out a science project;
Come to a big celebration event;
Win science equipment for your school

This leaflet gives you a choice of 3 projects.
This pdf file was originally a folded A3 document and so the page order runs 4, 1, 2, 3, therefore print on A4 paper and place back to back or print double sided and then fold in half to create an A5 leaflet.

  • Adobe Acrobat PDF, 289kb/2 pages, comp_cartoon.pdf

    The children should select one investigation to do and write a small report on their work. The report is to be in a set format of 8 pages but we are hoping for flair and innovation. The choice of projects is based on Concept Cartoons and the children can pick whatever aspects they like to investigate. Concept Cartoons are being used by many schools as an effective way of developing the children's understanding of science

We hope that several groups of children in a class or in the school will take part and they should ideally work in teams of up to 5 per project. Once the projects are complete the school must to decide which is the best one - this could be your decision or you might like to hold a special event and ask parents, teachers and governors to make a selection. We would like to encourage you to do this so that every child involved, feels that their contribution is valued. The SETPOINT team can help you organise your school event and offer assistance with assessment.

Your chosen team and their teacher are then invited to a special celebration event at the GlaxoSmithKline site in Stevenage on Wednesday 3 July. People will talk to the children about their projects, look at the reports and overall winners will be selected. There will also be a fun challenge activity and a science show.

For the winning schools there will be prizes of up to £250 each for equipment chosen from microscopes, data loggers or an iCam flexible video camera.

All of the projects can be used to obtain national Young Investigator awards or Bronze CREST awards. SETPOINT Hertfordshire can advise on how to do this. If you choose to take part in the challenge you must register your interest by 21 March.

The Hertfordshire School Improvement & Advisory Service, GlaxoSmithKline and SETPOINT Hertfordshire (formerly Herts SATRO) are working together to encourage and celebrate good science in schools.
