Assessment NewsFebruary 2010Assessment & Reporting ArrangementsThe current information on ARA (Assessment and Reporting Arrangements) is that for this year and next science will be on the same Sc1, Sc2, Sc3, Sc4 strands, so carry on as before with Y6 subject knowledge assessment but use teacher assessment of Sc1 skills using the sheet from the grid. See attainment below In years to come the ARA may change. Assessing Pupil ProgressThe official resources are now available through the National Strategies website with standards folders of pupil work. Studies from the pilot show that those schools that have embedded scientific enquiry and assessment for learning practice are well placed to begin with science APP. The National roll out programme starts in June, so don’t panic! I am starting a pilot group with a few schools this term to trial the gridlines with their pupil assessment. If you want to trial the resources I would suggest starting with the two levels sheet from the materials on the website and just using a highlighter pen to identify the statements the pupil has achieved. Just try with a few pupils in your class. I have developed a document similar to the one many schools are using now to track Sc1 skills. You might like to try this, let me know how it works for you. Don't do it now for Y6 it will be a slow roll out and will not be expected to be embedded for many years. Y3/4 would be a good place to start. See my example timeline for roll out. As time progresses I would suggest that schools carry out cross year moderation and create their own exemplar folders to show the type of assessment completed and a sample of different levels, but not portfolios for every child! Exemplars are great for new members of staff. Training NetworksTraining networks for Primary Science APP will be running throughout the county during June. If you would like to pre-register for one of these courses please email kayleigh.goss@hertscc.gov.uk with your name and school.
