New Research on PSHE Education

Mapping study of the prevalent models of PSHE education delivery and their effectiveness.

Independent researchers at Sheffield Hallam University have been commissioned by DCSF to conduct a study into the current provision of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education in schools. The first phase of the study has started with surveys being sent to a sample of over 6,000 PSHE co-ordinators/leads in primary and secondary schools, asking about how PSHE education is delivered in their school; perceptions of effectiveness; assessment strategies used; sources of support; and planning for the future of PSHE education.

The second phase of the research will involve case study visits to 15 schools in the summer term. The findings will help inform DCSF's planning for all strands of PSHE becoming statutory in September 2011, particularly the areas where schools need more support and guidance. If you are a PSHE lead and receive a questionnaire through the post, please do respond promptly and let DCSF know your views.

A report for the DCSF will be published in November 2010.
