PSHE Guidance
Personal and Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship
are currently non-statutory in Primary Schools but they are part of the National
Curriculum Guidance. The recent independent review by Sir Alastair MacDonald this year (2009) has recommended that PSHE becomes a statutory part of the National Curriculum.
PSHE is currently non-statutory in Secondary Schools but is part of the
National Curriculum Guidance - Personal Wellbeing & Economic Wellbeing & Financial Capability Programmes of Study for KS3 & KS4.
Citizenship is a statutory National Curriculum subject in Secondary
Schools.
The National Health School Standard is designed to give as much
practical support as possible to schools to create an enjoyable,
safe, productive learning environment and to minimise potential
health risks
The key themes are:
- PSHE and Citizenship
- Sex and relationships education
- Drug education including alcohol and tobacco
- Emotional health and well being
- Physical activity
- Safety
- Healthy eating
A review of the Primary National Curriculum has also been undertaken by Sir Jim Rose (2008/9). The review recommends that from 2011 the primary curriculum is organised into six areas of learning. PSHE and SRE will be taught within the topic of Understanding Physical Development, Health and Wellbeing.
