Able Year 4 Teaching Project - South Oxhey

Pupils engaged in dramatic explorations of characterThe project brought together six South Oxhey schools with a common focus around learning and teaching, particularly supporting able children in Year 4. A number of literacy and mathematics sessions were delivered in the Spring and Summer term 2006. Up to six, able Year 4 pupils from each of the schools clustered for the lessons.

The project was designed to provide a model of effective learning and teaching and demonstrate Primary National Strategy recommendations and resources. The project work took the form of a series of teaching sessions for both literacy and mathematics.

Five literacy units were modeled upon the teaching sequence for writing and integrated strategies to raise pupil’s engagement, motivation and achievements in writing using:

  • visual stimuli including digital technologies;
  • drama and other speaking and listening activities;
  • ICT (including Interactive Whiteboard - IWB);
  • assessment for learning including self- and peer-evaluation; effective feedback and marking; the use of improvement prompts and closing the gap strategies.

Three standalone mathematics units focused upon the effective teaching of systematic strategies to solve different types of problems using:

  • strategies to support different learning styles (VAK)
  • ICT (including Interactive Whiteboard - IWB);
  • assessment for learning including self- and peer-evaluation; effective feedback and marking; the use of improvement prompts and closing the gap strategies.

The project was managed and teaching sessions delivered by a Primary Strategy Consultant – David Cook.

The project has impacted not only on standards of pupil’s achievement in reading, writing and mathematics but on teachers’ development. Monitoring of the pupil’s progress revealed that a high percentage of pupils had continued to make excellent progress.
