Transition

Recent research on transfer has identified the need for schools to work more on curriculum continuity and to pay attention to academic transfer and the specific strategies that help sustain pupils' progress.

Curriculum continuity refers to:

  • Knowing which topics have already been covered.
  • Knowing what skills and understandings have been established.
  • Knowing the pace and style of previous lessons in the subject.

The framework for teaching mathematics from Reception to Year 6 and the Framework for teaching mathematics: Yeas 7, 8 and 9, offer a detailed effective progression through Key Stages 2 and 3. Reference to the Frameworks is of utmost importance in developing continuity.

The materials produced by the NNS and the KS3 Strategy: Transition from Years 6 to Years 7 – Mathematics units of work , provide units of work which can be used to support effective transition on mathematics.
