Getting to Grips

The renewal of the Primary Frameworks for literacy and mathematics is a significant school improvement tool to raise standards in learning and teaching. To ensure it is implemented effectively the following could be used as a guide.

‘Getting to Grips in Steps’

The Subject leader DVD, along with the Headteacher booklet, is designed to support the implementation of the Primary Framework for literacy and mathematics linked to the school’s development priorities. The Primary Strategy has provided a range of support materials on the DVD. These will need to be selected and adapted to contribute to the school’s ongoing professional development programme.

There is a recommendation for schools to set aside a minimum of six staff meetings, or sessions at INSET days to become familiar with the Primary Framework for both literacy and mathematics and to explore its potential. Decisions about the use of these materials will depend on your school’s development priorities in literacy and mathematics, the strand selected from the Primary Framework and the profile of the identified focus children.
