Countdown to the Games Not long to go to the start of the Olympic Games, many schools are deep in preparation to bring the experience of the global event into classrooms. Schools and teachers are busy planning lessons, events and activities to make effective use of the games to enrich children’s learning experiences. Following numerous requests, the Primary Teaching and Learning Team are running a day of training to help schools and teachers plan high quality learning activities for English and mathematics. A small taste of these is outlined briefly below.

When we won the bid to host the London 2012 Games, we made a promise to inspire more young people to choose sport. One of the ways we can do this is through volunteering. We’re proud to offer more than 2,000 opportunities for 16-18 year olds to volunteer at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
We’re looking for recognised organisations such as youth or sports clubs and community and volunteering groups, as well as Get Set Network schools and colleges, to put forward over 250 teams of young volunteers to help us fulfil vital roles and help make the Games happen.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young people to get involved in the greatest show on earth – while learning new skills, gaining experience and making new friends.
Young Games Makers will be needed in the Technology department and across a number of sports, from Aquatics and Athletics to Taekwondo and Volleyball.
Please read all the information in this section before deciding whether to apply. The Have you got what it takes page is a good place to start:
We want to make sure that Young Games Makers have a fantastic experience, and that they are well cared for throughout their volunteer journey. As a result, each role is for a team of young people, headed by a team leader who already works with them – like a teacher or youth leader.
Team leaders will apply for a role on behalf of the young volunteers, and will be responsible for them during selection events, training and the Games.
With London 2012 getting closer and the new School Games Organiser posts in place, Hertfordshire is really getting "Ready for Winners". The government wants all children to share in the excitement of the Olympics and many of you have already joined the "Get Set" network. To ensure you do not miss out on developments as they happen please log on to the web address below and make it one of your "favourites".
The London Olympics is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us all to maximise the impact sport can have on everyone, especially children.
