You can order music teaching books from any good bookshop, and
general high street Music Shops can usually supply both books and
classroom instruments. However, as schools resources don't usually
feature in their normal stock, it may take some time to get hold
of them.
There are some national suppliers who specialise in school music.
They produce excellent catalogues, can offer advice based on many
years' experience and can be contacted easily by email , phone or
Fax.
Many big stores have very good direct order websites.

is the same
UNIT 1 - ONGOING SKILLS
Nursery rhymes
Recordings such as those from the Early Learning Centre
provide a good starting point.
SAYDISC - see suppliers - have a CD of nursery rhymes sung
in the traditional way.
A recording of voices being used in different ways ( speaking,
singing, humming, shouting, whispering ) would be useful -
even a home made one
UNIT 2 - SOUNDS INTERESTING
A homemade recording of sounds would be useful. Divide it
into 3 categories - at home, at school, outside.
Oxford Primary Music scheme stage 1 has a similar recording
UNIT 3 - THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT
The recording of school, home and environment sounds will
be very useful for this unit too.
Serenade for wind 3rd movementk361 - Mozart
As far as we are aware, this example is only available
as an individual recording. If looking for an alternative,
try the 'Duration ' chapter in 'Listening to Music - Elements
5+' A and C Black, or use some folk dance or march music where
long and short sounds make a rhythm against a strong pulse.
Morse code
The children could record their own morse messages using
a buzzer or keyboard and a cassette recorder.
The music for the Inspector Morse TV series is composed around
a morse code message of his name.
Listening to Music - Elements 7+ - A and C Black - has a chapter
called 'Inspector Morse'. This has listening examples and
activities.
This probably for a second visit to the unit - Y2

singing
Carnival of the animals
Saint Seans
Many recordings of this piece are available

Instrument examples
Live music is always best!
If 'live' is not possible, go for a good video and use CD
roms with sampled sound for the next best thing. Contact the
major suppliers for details of what is available.
Audio recordings alone are not so good for introducing individual
instrument sounds - the pupils need to relate the sound to
the soundmaker.
Posters can be a helpful backup - see suppliers' catalogues.
UNIT 7 - RAIN RAIN GO AWAY
weather examples - 'Rain' on Sounds Topical (OXFORD),
raindrop prelude, Snow, storm music, etc. Perhaps real weather

the video version which many families will have is good for
showing movement with the music

to any collection - use it here and for writing/art stimulus,
assembly listening.
Effects in the pop music of the 1950's e.g. reverb, echo
And e.g. backwards sounds in 'Strawberry Fields'?
Look out for the music of the Japanese composer and arranger,
Tomita
It is not widely available now but libraries may have
it and it still can be ordered if you like the sound of synthesized
music
You could also listen to keyboard based bands of the early
1980's

The QCA list above will give a fairly large and comprehensive
collection. Many of these recordings can also be used to extend
listening repertoire in assemble and elsewhere.
This will give you some essential 'whole' pieces like 'The Planets',
'Carnival of the Animals' and 'Pictures at an Exhibition.
A good selection of world music - ordinary shops sell samplers
providing a wide range. For more range and more background information
look at suppliers like Saydisc and Knock on Wood
Where possible, look for examples which are short so that the
children can hear them WHOLE.
