Suppliers of Classroom Music Resources

  2. Musical examples given in the QCA scheme of work - and where to find them !

If you are using the QCA scheme of work you will need most of these. Sometimes they form an important part of the activities, and at other times they provide backup

Other examples may be substituted if the listening purpose is the same

UNIT 1 - ONGOING SKILLS

Nursery rhymes
Recordings such as those from the Early Learning Centre provide a good starting point.
SAYDISC - see suppliers - have a CD of nursery rhymes sung in the traditional way.
A recording of voices being used in different ways ( speaking, singing, humming, shouting, whispering ) would be useful - even a home made one

UNIT 2 - SOUNDS INTERESTING

A homemade recording of sounds would be useful. Divide it into 3 categories - at home, at school, outside.
Oxford Primary Music scheme stage 1 has a similar recording

UNIT 3 - THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT

The recording of school, home and environment sounds will be very useful for this unit too.

Serenade for wind 3rd movementk361 - Mozart
As far as we are aware, this example is only available as an individual recording. If looking for an alternative, try the 'Duration ' chapter in 'Listening to Music - Elements 5+' A and C Black, or use some folk dance or march music where long and short sounds make a rhythm against a strong pulse.

Morse code
The children could record their own morse messages using a buzzer or keyboard and a cassette recorder. The music for the Inspector Morse TV series is composed around a morse code message of his name.
Listening to Music - Elements 7+ - A and C Black - has a chapter called 'Inspector Morse'. This has listening examples and activities.
This probably for a second visit to the unit - Y2

UNIT 4 - FEEL THE PULSE

Sea shanty
Sea Shanties can sometimes be found in songbooks which have accompanying CD's E.G. Drunken Sailor
SAYDISC - see suppliers - have a CD of Sea Shanties performed authentically.

Work songs - strong pulse
Sea shanties are one type of worksong - see above
Other examples -Day Oh or Banana Boat Song- Caribbean work song, Patrick on the Railroad from Sounds Musical (OXFORD), Shanty Boys in the Pine, Dashing away with the Smoothing Iron.
Deena Day has a pack of worksongs with tape which can be sent to schools on request - £7.50 to cover cost of copying

Musicals, with dance sequences - best if on video
Compilation cd's are available

Air from suite no.3 Bach

Four Seasons - Vivaldi - both of these famous pieces are widely available on classical compilations

Waltz
Both of these dances are characterised by their strong pulse
March

UNIT 5 - TAKING OFF

Sitar and eastern singing
'Listening to Music Elements 5+' has an example of Indian singing

Carnival of the animals
Saint Seans
Many recordings of this piece are available

UNIT 6 - WHAT'S THE SCORE?

Instrument examples
Live music is always best!
If 'live' is not possible, go for a good video and use CD roms with sampled sound for the next best thing. Contact the major suppliers for details of what is available.
Audio recordings alone are not so good for introducing individual instrument sounds - the pupils need to relate the sound to the soundmaker.
Posters can be a helpful backup - see suppliers' catalogues.

UNIT 7 - RAIN RAIN GO AWAY

weather examples - 'Rain' on Sounds Topical (OXFORD), raindrop prelude, Snow, storm music, etc. Perhaps real weather sounds recorded.
Also try the Thunder and Lightning Polka by Strauss

UNIT 8 - ONGOING SKILLS

Pictures at an exhibition - Mussorgsky - Samuel Goldenberg and Mr Schmuyle is a great contrasts piece - use movement and art.
This is available as a CD of all the 'Pictures' in many different versions - well worth having in any school.

UNIT 9 - ANIMAL MAGIC

'Carnival of the animals' by Saint Seans is a must for this unit
Like 'Pictures at an Exhibition' it is a whole CD in itself, but worth buying

The jungle book- 'Trust in Me' and Dawn Parade' - the video version which many families will have is good for showing movement with the music

UNIT 10 - PLAY IT AGAIN

Tubular bells - Mike Oldfield - ask anyone over 40 to dig out their copy!

Unsquare dance - Dave Brubeck - this is one of the examples in 'Listening to Music 7+ - see listening resources
Can also be found on some jazz compilations

7th symphony, 2nd movement - Beethoven - this example is only a short example from a long symphony, but one which is worth having - cut price versions available

UNIT 11 - THE CLASS ORCHESTRA

examples of song accompaniments - e.g. other voice, piano, orchestra, electronic, rock band, big band etc. - collect examples with the children
A range of songs including non western - use songbook recordings

UNIT 12 - DRAGON SCALES

Chinese music, jazz, blues - (illustrating pentatonic)
Saydisc's 'Listen to this' collection has examples of Chinese music
Sounds Topical recording has one example

UNIT 13 - PAINTING WITH SOUND

'Pictures at an Exhibition' would be useful again in this unit

'Central Park in the Dark' - Ives - a great example if you can find it
or try
'Quiet City' - - Copland - this is on the Sounds Musical CD (OXFORD)

'On hearing the first cuckoo in spring' - Delius - may be found on a classical compilation

'Peer Gynt' - Grieg - this may be on a cd of its own, or paired with another work - worth having in your school collection

'Albatross' - Fleetwood Mac - again ask your friends over 40!

UNIT 14 - SALT, MUSTARD, VINEGAR, PEPPER

It might be interesting and amusing to play grown up version of singing games, such as 'Agadoo', 'The Birdie Song', 'The Locomotion' !!!

UNIT 15 - ONGOING SKILLS

Use the recordings that come with your songbooks to model good singing practice

UNIT 16 - CYCLIC PATTERNS

Brandenburg Concerto - Bach - there are 6 of these -will be on one cd- worth having as part of your collection .

heavy rock, - check the words are suitable

UNIT 17 - ROUNDABOUT

Listen to some of the rounds on your songbook CD's

UNIT 18 - JOURNEY INTO SPACE

The Planets Suite by Gustav Holst is a valuable addition to any collection - use it here and for writing/art stimulus, assembly listening.

Effects in the pop music of the 1950's e.g. reverb, echo

And e.g. backwards sounds in 'Strawberry Fields'?

Look out for the music of the Japanese composer and arranger, Tomita
It is not widely available now but libraries may have it and it still can be ordered if you like the sound of synthesized music

You could also listen to keyboard based bands of the early 1980's

Film music will be useful here too - 'Star Wars', 'Star Trek' etc.

Under Stars from Apollo: atmospheres and soundtracks by Brian Eno - friends over 40 again !

UNIT 19 - SONGWRITER

Songs from the charts - or compilations

Broadway musical songs - Videos are useful to show how they were staged

Contrast with modern musicals e.g. Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera by Lloyd Webber

Protest song e.g. Bob Dylan

Musical hall songs

Spirituals

Songs from around the world e.g. African songs, Aboriginal songs

Songs for different occasions e.g. weddings, birthdays, Christmas

UNIT 20 - STARS HIDE YOUR FIRES

No specific pieces mentioned

UNIT 21 - WHO KNOWS?

No specific pieces mentioned

3. Building a listening collection for classroom and assembly use

Three publications would form a core:

  • The CD's from Sounds Topical and Sounds Musical (Oxford) - even if you don't use them as a scheme they are worth having, and an economical way of building up a great deal of variety.
  • Listen to This KS1 and KS2 from Saydisc - have information leaflets
  • Listening to Music Elements - A and C Black - 3 volumes

All three are very good value

The QCA list above will give a fairly large and comprehensive collection. Many of these recordings can also be used to extend listening repertoire in assemble and elsewhere.

This will give you some essential 'whole' pieces like 'The Planets', 'Carnival of the Animals' and 'Pictures at an Exhibition.

Also useful:

  • Pop compilations - different decades
  • Jazz collections
  • Musicals - selection
  • Classical selection
  • Music relating to curriculum themes - e.g. Victorian songs, Tudor Music
  • Opera selection
  • Choir selection

A good selection of world music - ordinary shops sell samplers providing a wide range. For more range and more background information look at suppliers like Saydisc and Knock on Wood

Where possible, look for examples which are short so that the children can hear them WHOLE.
