European Day of Languages - October 2010 Report

Chancellor’s European Day of Languages 14th October 2010

On October 14th 2010 Chancellor’s celebrated the European Day of Languages. This is an EU initiative aimed at encouraging language learning, as well as celebrating multiculturalism. The school always used to join these celebrations informally, but since we were awarded a second specialism in languages, we have always taken part formally and on a much bigger scale.

On the day, all Year 8 pupils did not have their regular lessons. Instead they took part in a number of activities, which helped them to increase their appreciation of all languages, as well as hopefully being fun. They had a chance to learn some Greek, Italian and Russian, as well as having a lesson, which focused on European Awareness in general.  The Geography department also joined the celebrations and organised a lesson for them on France, which tied in with the topic of Europe which the year group was studying. However, the undoubted highlight was a visit from the Flying Theatre Company who performed the play, The Three Musketeers. The show was fantastic and included dance, singing, acrobatics, juggling and magic! It was thoroughly enjoyed by both pupils and staff.

Many teachers outside the languages department also planned lessons for all their pupils to encourage linguistic awareness.  In Technology, certain lessons were taught in Spanish, the Maths department researched the famous Italian Mathematician Fennebacci, and the English dept discussed the foreign origins of many words in our language. In addition, the drama department learned about the work of the French mime artist Marcel Marceau and the RE dept discussed the meaning of the word ‘peace’, trying to find how to express it in as many languages as possible.

During the day, all teachers valiantly tried to greet their pupils in a variety of languages, (although some
were more successful than others!) Pupils were also offered the chance to buy a number of international foods in the canteen, and many asked for them in a foreign language.

All staff and pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day, and we hope to build on this year’s success next year.
