Congratulations to Mike Ullmann, Head of the Languages College at Hockerill Anglo-European College in Bishop’s Stortford, who has won the prestigious Guardian award for teacher of the year in a secondary school. Mike has been an outstanding influence on his school for the last 15 years, during which time he has transformed the approach and practice of teaching languages. His unprecedented approach to teaching languages has made Hockerill Anglo European College a model for bilingual education throughout the UK. Pupils are taught history and geography in French and German to develop their language skills. Hockerill is now extending it to maths and science. John Harris, director of CSF, said “Congratulations to Mike. Our teachers rarely find themselves in the spotlight like this - being recognised for the hard work and commitment they give to pupils, schools and local communities. It is a real achievement and well deserved.” Mike will be presenting to secondary colleagues at Hertfordshire Development Centre on 25th April as part of the launch of a new MFL training programme for secondary MFL teachers. This was attended by 15 colleagues from 7 secondary schools across the East Quadrant. Lizzie Heath led a impressive presentation on making use of the Interactive Whiteboard.
