Children, Asylum-seeker and Refugee Section

The team looks after all refugee children of school age in education in Hertfordshire, and is also responsible for the holistic care of all unaccompanied asylum-seeking and refugee children in the County.

We work to provide a cohesive, integrated service to support unaccompanied minor and refugee children throughout Hertfordshire in a holistic way. We are based in Stevenage and we are part of the Achievement of Refugees and Travellers Team. We are a CSF (Children, Schools and Families) Service and are part of MECSS (Minority Ethnic Curriculum Support Services).

Team Co-ordinator

To ensure that all strands of support inter-link and that the young people receive the services they require according to statutory guidelines. To ensure that information is collected and collated as required and reports are prepared. To manage the team.

Social Care Manager/Senior Practitioner

To manage the Social Work aspect of the team. To line manage the Professional Assistants and social worker who are responsible for direct casework To carry a caseload of complex cases which could include any child protection issues.

Social Worker

To assess the care needs of unaccompanied minors who are referred to the Team and co-ordinate the services required to meet those needs. To carry or co-ordinate LAC cases.

Schools Support and Development Teacher

To work with schools and liaise with other professionals and agencies in order to raise the achievement and attainment of unaccompanied minor and refugee children.

Professional Assistants

To co-ordinate cases. To asses the social and emotional needs of unaccompanied refugee children. To co-ordinate access to all services available to them i.e. Connexions, health services, education and training, accommodation, legal services and other agencies e.g. The Refugee Council. Direct work with all Unaccompanied Minors.

Educational Welfare Officer

To identify pupils arriving in Hertfordshire, access appropriate education for them and support their attendance at school, liaising with schools, parents and other support agencies.

Connexions Personal Advisor

To identify the needs of all unaccompanied minors and help them to take part in education, training, work and self-development. To provide information, advice, guidance and personal development opportunities to unaccompanied minors. To build trust and confidence of young people, to raise aspirations and ensure equality of opportunity.

Finance Support

To keep all financial transactions relating to clients in order. To make up payments for clients, arrange accommodation costs and other associated costs such as utilities. To prepare grant claims for the Home Office.

Accommodation Officer

To identify suitable supported accommodation for 16/17 yr olds. To support 18 year old in finding suitable accommodation to rent. To oversee tenancy and supported lodgings agreements. To ensure all health and safety regulations are met.

Administrative Support

To provide a first point of contact for the team. To collate figures on attendance and prepare reports. To manage the resource library. To type reports, assessments and minutes of meetings and to undertake general office duties.
