This case study demonstrates the value of working with partner primary schools to provide extra classes which: improve motivation and accelerate learning both before and after secondary transfer.

One of the targets of our community plan as a technology college was to set up Maths masterclasses for Year 6 pupils.

The classes run after school, for one hour once a week. They have been a great success. We began in September 2001 with 17 pupils nominated by four of our link primary schools. The pupils enjoyed the classes so much that they began turning up half an hour early and working on our SuccessMaker programme until it was time for the lesson. Given the level of commitment, we decided to expand the programme and set up two Maths masterclasses from January 2002. This was so well received that, in setting up this year's programme, we have run two masterclasses from the outset.

The pupils attending the masterclasses have achieved very high standards, going well beyond the level of work covered by their peers in primary school. A number of last year's group, for example, who subsequently joined Bushey Meads and are now doing Year 9 Maths instead of the usual Year 7 course.
