On 28 February 2006, we trialed Mathematics Master Classes for students in years 7 and 8. The event was hosted by St. George’s School and was run by Professor Alan Davies from the University of Hertfordshire.
Thirty students from Sir John Lawes, Roundwood Park, Hertswood, Townsend and St. George’s enjoyed a number of activities led by Professor Davies and his team; these events included the story of π, the star-spangled banner, bridges, the Fibonacci sequence, and chaos in the classroom!
The students finished the day by designing posters which summarized what they had learned and gave feedback on their enjoyment of the day itself.
The trial was a success and we are hoping to run many more this year around the County. The Leading Mathematics teachers are going to work together to produce different activities for our next event. We envisage this event to be held in several different venues. Please contact Julie Garstang if you are interested in hosting or participating in such a day.
Invitations will be sent out to schools once all arrangements have been made.
