General Information

There is now substantial data available from a wide variety of sources. Locally you can access data from MIU:

Smoking Out Underachievement

This excellent booklet, which has been prepared by the Fischer Family Trust working with the School Improvement and Excellence Division of the DfES, has been written to provide schools with guidance, advice and examples to increase their understanding and use of 'value added' data.

Pupil Achievement Tracker (PAT)

Schools are now being strongly encouraged to make use of PAT (Pupil Achievement Tracker).

The software allows schools and LEAs to import and analyse their own pupil performance data against national performance data.  There are four main areas of analysis possible in the PAT:

  • School level analyses - comparing the school's results in the key stage   tests and teacher assessments with schools similar to them (in terms of either Free School Meal eligibility or prior attainment)
  • Pupil level value added - comparing the progress of individual pupils or groups of pupils between key stages (or within key stages if the school has pupils' optional test results) with progress nationally
  • Target setting - assisting the school to set targets for individual pupils in the light of projections based on progress by similar pupils in the best performing schools with a similar baseline.
  • Question level analysis - allowing schools to see how their pupils performed in each of the questions in the national curriculum tests compared to performance nationally

This information can be accessed at:

Analysing Data

There is a very good guide to analysing data produced by the National Key Stage 3 Strategy. Entitled 'Analysing and interpreting pupils' attainment data and reviewing their progress' - this is available at:

National & County Figures

The Joint Council for General Qualifications is a very good source of national data.

Hertfordshire's Assessment Team provides a range of data and information to support schools. This can be accessed at:

Fischer Trust Data

Increasingly schools are making good use of the data available form The Fischer Family Trust Performance Project. Helping LEAs and Schools to make more effective use of Performance Data is a key focus of this project and provides a range of analyses to support self-evaluation, assessment and target setting. Hertfordshire LEA is a partner in the project. The data is provided to each Hertfordshire school.
