Social Bookmarking

What is a Social Bookmarking?

Very simply, Social Bookmarking refers to websites where you can save, organise, share and search your internet favourites. Usually the webpage where you save your favourites is public, so that others with similar interests can use your bookmarks (though it’s possible with some Social Bookmarking sites to make bookmarks private.)

When you save a bookmark you give it some ‘tags.’ These are keywords which enable the bookmark to be found in a relevant search. There are many Social Bookmarking sites available, all of which are slightly different. Most, like wikis and blogs, have RSS feeds so you can see updates and access the bookmarks from an RSS Reader. Read more about RSS here. Social Bookmarking sites are free to use but require a registration.

What is Social Bookmarking used for?

Although these sites are primarily for storing your own favourites so that they are accessible from any online computer, the ‘social’ aspect means that they can be used for finding new information, building online networks of people who share your interests, and providing a search engine which only looks for sites that have been bookmarked and tagged by other people using the site (and therefore come ‘recommended’.) Also, every tag you use with a bookmark gets its own URL, so by entering this URL you would get a page listing all the sites that you bookmarked with this tag.

For example, the URL http://del.icio.us/popular/web2.0  links to the Del.icio.us site and will bring up a page showing all the most popular bookmarks that have been given the tag ‘web2.0.’ If you changed the word /popular/ in this URL for a registered username, you would be presented with a list of sites tagged with ‘web2.0’ that have been saved by that particular user.

With some you can save bookmarks for other people if you find a site you think they would like.

If you look at the bottom of many web pages you can see buttons which directly save the page to your social bookmarking site, like these buttons on the BBC site.

Why use Social Bookmarking in the Classroom?

A social bookmarking site could be a useful tool for storing bookmarks that will be helpful to your pupils. You could add a selection of links to your page, give the page’s address to the pupils and they could use this for their research. Or, you could give them the URL to specific tags you have used, so they only see sites relevant to their research. Some sites, for example ‘Furl’ allow you to actually save a copy of the page you are bookmarking, so even if it changes or disappears you will still have it. Therefore using Social Bookmarking can help learners wade through the often irrelevant mountain of information they can be presented with when using normal search engines.

Of course, your pupils can have their own social bookmarking pages, or a class could have a collaborative site, as suggested below.

Examples of School Use

  • A shared class Social Bookmarking account for saving links relevant to a particular project or subject.
  • Start a shared Social Bookmarking account for school staff, to help the sharing of online resources.
  • Use a Social Bookmarking site yourself and bookmark sites for classroom use. You can use the specific tag URL in class (see above) so that only those sites which are absolutely relevant are shown.
  • Start a Social Bookmarking account for each pupil in your class. You can then add bookmarks for specific students.
  • Simply use a Social Bookmarking site as a search engine instead of the usual ones. You may find all sorts of new things. Try it now!
