Ubuntu logoUbuntu is a free Open Source operating system (a popular version of Linux.) There are no licensing costs involved in implementing this system, but like any network system, it requires expertise and support to run successfully.

Thin Client Technology

March 2007 Becta has just published Thin Client technology in schools, a summary of research findings.

In 2006 Becta commissioned research into the use of Thin Client technology in schools. The aim of the research was to provide insights into the use of Thin Client technology in schools for the benefit of education professionals and policy makers. In particular the research looked at the functionality, benefits, issues, impact on learning and teaching and the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of Thin Client technology. In its simplest form, wireless technology offers schools another means of connecting computers to the network and facilitates data transfer between PCs or other components without the constraints of wires or cables. Rather than run miles of cable through a building some schools are now considering wireless technology.
