What is it?

This is an archive of clips taken from BBC programmes. Each clip is about two minutes long. You can preview the clip in your browser or download it in a number of formats (Windows Media, QuickTime and peg).

How can I use them?

You are free to use the clips in schools. There are many ways you can use them directly in lessons. For example:

  • an introduction to a topic
  • a stimulus for discussion
  • part of an Assessment for Learning exercise
  • a quiz.

You can also edit movies into shorter sequences using Windows Movie Maker, QuickTime Pro or iMovie. Or, even better, you could get your students to do this as part of a presentation or summary activity - adding their own voice-over.

What clips are available?

The site has been set up as a trial. At the moment there are a hundred clips in these categories:

  • Geography (geology, rocks, volcanoes, rivers, glaciers and rainfall)
  • History (mainly Roman re-enactments and some People's War interview)
  • Places (Asian, American and European visits)
  • Nature (some nice natural history clips)
  • Politics (a small selection)
  • Audio Clips (WWII radio clips from Neville Chamberlain to VJ Day)

How do I get the clips?

It is a free site. However, you will need to register (and this may need some patience). Once you have done that, you follow the links and download quite simply.
