Strategic Leadership of ICT
Marina’s seminar, which was relevant to all phases, looked at how best to ensure successful implementation of ICT in the classroom. Marina shared her own experience of starting out from scratch as a NQT, to leadership of one of the first schools in Hertfordshire to be awarded the new ICT Mark. Marina stressed the importance of SLT involvement, being prepared to take part in pilots/projects and to talk to people who are ‘forward thinking’.
Delegates worked in groups to share their own experiences and the resources available to them. Having a vision, sharing it with colleagues, regular training for all staff and making a financial commitment – were all thought to be crucial to success. |

Using New Technologies (inc Video Conferencing)
In this session Chris gave an overview of how video Conferencing is being used in Hertfordshire schools, and what conferencing options are available. He then went on to demonstrate how schools can get started with Video Conferencing using the free online 'Flashmeeting' and a webcam or Digital Blue.
Chris then went on to demonstrate the Sony PSP and talk about its potential in education, and he described a forthcoming pilot in Hertfordshire using these handheld devices.
There then followed a brief introduction to Podcasting and how and why a school might get started with making their own broadcasts. Chris wrapped up the session by gauging delegates' opinions of the new technologies he had covered, using a voting system (therefore giving a demonstration of such a system in the process.)

ICT in the Foundation Stage
Early Years Adviser, Melissa Fitch and Leading Teacher, Rachel Heath explored how ICT can be used to engage and enthuse in the Early Years. The session looked at different types of control toys, role play equipment, interactive whiteboards, re-recordable devices and digital video cameras, with Rachel giving examples of how she has used these things in class.

Primary National Strategy
ICT in the renewed framework - David Cook, PNS Consultant.
This seminar looked at some of the ICT resources, on the PNS website (DfES Standards: Primary Frameworks) and Keys to Learning DVD, available as part of the renewed framework for literacy and mathematics.
David's key messages were:
-
There are lots of resources available to support the renewed framework. These need not be restricted to a particular year group and alternatives can be used.
-
We need to see the value ICT can add to the learning.
-
The use of ICT is a journey, which is well is worth taking.
-
The Framework is a guide not a script.

SEAL
This seminar provided a showcase for some of the Interactive whiteboard resources developed by teachers to support implementation of the SEAL curriculum resource, as part of the ICT / SEAL county project.
Hannah East, Primary National Strategy, Behaviour and Attendance Consultant and Sue Pennington (Primary ICT Adviser) opened the session with an overview of the project, which included a brief demonstration of some of the Luton resources that have already been developed to support SEAL, as well as some of the ICT resources that are already included on the SEAL curriculum resource CD.
The main part of the session focussed on Lisa Valla, (Deputy Head at Prae Wood Primary), and Sarah Cass, (Foundation stage teacher at Westbury Primary), two of the project teachers, who talked about their experiences on the project and presented and modelled some of the resources that they had developed.

ICT Mark – Self Review Framework
Philippa took us on a journey from the initial development of the Self-review Framework, to where we are today. Hertfordshire already has many schools working through the SRF with a number achieving the ICT Mark.
Philippa explained the SRF is about more that just discrete ICT. It takes a much broader look at how schools develop their vision and implement ICT in all aspects of school life and beyond. Indeed, the success of the SRF is due to the focus on the whole spectrum of school development, including planning, monitoring and evaluation. She went on to describe the eight elements of the SRF and she allowed time for the delegates to explore element one.
Philippa concluded the session by encouraging schools to work towards the ICT Mark, which is a nationally recognised standard of good quality.

Teacher-led Research in ICT
The HertsCam community provides teachers and educators in Hertfordshire with the opportunity to carry out classroom-based research and involves Hertfordshire CSF and the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education. The leader of the programme from the Faculty, Dr. David Frost, discussed the benefits of teacher-led enquiry, going to give an overview of the opportunities for teachers to carry out classroom-based enquiry, either through a one year Certificate for Continuing Professional Studies or a two MEd in Teaching and Learning.
This was followed by a presentation by Shelagh Mackenzie of her MEd project investigating the potential of control ICT to support pupils' problem-solving capability. Her work, which was completed in 2006, was carried out in collaboration with teachers from two Hertfordshire schools and supported them in their understanding of the technology. |

Playing Games, Having Fun
In this session, Russell explored the potential of game playing to support the learning process. He showed some video clips of children learning through playing games and articulating how these activities were supporting their development. Russell also showed a number of online learning activities which had been developed to support learners across the phases. He also referred to BBC Jam, which provided a number of excellent resources, as well as the potential uses of personal game players in school (eg PSPs). Finally, the session ended on a high as we all took part in a number of collaborative games using a system which had been designed to be used in pubs! These games were highly addictive and great fun - so much so that we hardly realised we were being tested on our French vocabulary!

Everyone wants to broadcast
In this seminar, Russell demonstrated how easy it is to put together a radio broadcast to engage and motivate pupils. Starting off with examples of what is going on at the moment with school radio stations, Russell moved on to practical demonstrations of software to get started, including free downloads. He discussed the importance of additions such as soundtracks and jingles, again giving practical demonstrations of creative software to edit, record and mix.

Releasing the potential of Management Information in the Classroom
The seminar explained many of the features of the SIMS system. SIMS.net is a management information system (MIS) designed for schools
to tackle issues that really matter to them e.g. reducing workload and raising pupil performance.
It was explained that the system can generate many different reports including:
-
Class lists,
-
registers
-
information for school trips
-
exclusion letters (including behavioural data)
-
a range of standard letters
-
attendance reports
-
and even birthday certificates!
The system can be set up to automatically generate alerts and lists-for example a list of pupils marked late in the register eg for an EWO.
Assessment manger 7 is a powerful assessment tracking system within the SIMS system into which pupil subject marks can be entered.Assessment manager can then generate a range of reports analysing the attainment data.
