Approaches to Integrating ICT

The Primary National Strategy promotes the effective use of ICT in all areas of the curriculum, with the national expectation being that ICT should be used across the currriculum as appropriate.

ICT should be the chosen resource to support teaching and learning if the technologies can add value to the learning. It is important that technology is seen as a resource to support teaching and not to replace it.

Where ICT is used in other curriculum areas, the subject objectives must be the first learning object, with ICT skills beng applied through that curricum area.

All pupils are entitled to equality of access to ICT to support their learning, which does not mean that all pupils have to complete the same activity. As with all good teaching pedagogy, the needs and abilities must be the first consideration when identifying or creating activites for pupils to use in order to consolidate their understanding.

There are a wide variety of resources available to support the integration of ICT in all curriculum areas. Your choices include:

  • using pre-made, subject specific software,
  • using generic software to create resources or activities,
  • using pre-made resouces or activities from the Internet
  • using non-computer resources such as tape recorders, cameras, remote controlled 'toys' , video cameras etc.

There are also a variety of ICT resources available from the Primary National Strategy, which can be obtained through the following links:
