The school has 180 full-time pupils in Reception to Y2, organised into 6 classes.

A further 30 children attend Nursery in the morning and 30 in the afternoon. The school has at least twelve ethnic groups represented. Most pupils are from white British families.

The school has two microscopes, although up until the project had not used these in any great depth.

Why we would now use the Microscope?

We thought that there were many reasons for using the microscope, and these are listed below:

  • It is fun to use.
  • It is easy to use (although the staff will need to practise a little first before introducing to the children).
  • It can be used as a teaching tool.
  • It is very motivating for children.
  • It is accessible to the children – even very young children.
  • It can encourage the sharing ideas and turn taking.
  • Boys are keen to use it!
  • Excellent when linked to an LCD.
  • Chunky, durable and attractive.
  • It provides instant results and feedback.
  • It brings awe and wonder into the classroom.
  • It can be used for exploratory purposes.
  • Plug and play!

Examples

Pattern projected...Linking the microscope to a projector ensured that all the children could see how to add colour and effects to the magnified fabric

repeated pattern...An example of artwork created by taking a snapshot of the fabric under the microscope, and then adding different colours and patterns.

patchwork quilt effect...Fabric was placed under the microscope and a snapshot was taken of each. The snapshots were then imported into a word-processor to create a patchwork quilt effect.
