Assessing Pupil Progress New

  • APP is a new style of periodic assessment which gives a ‘clear’ profile of student’s achievements across a whole subject and key stage.
  • APP Ensures judgements can be ‘formally’ shared with parents and across transitional stages
  • APP will ensure:
    1. Consistency and reliable teacher assessment
    2. Align judgements with national standards

Faculties will need to use the ‘Assessment guidelines sheet’ available.  These provide focused assessment criteria based on the national curriculum level descriptors and learning objectives for the new national curriculum.  The assessment guidance given focuses on a small number of features in a students work or learning.

Sub levels are now defined as ‘low, secure and high’

Schools may also decide to use ‘I.E – Insufficient evidence, B.L – Below level’

In order for a student to achieve the sub levels they may have completed the following.

  • Low – several criteria for the level are highlighted but there are substantial gaps. Only 1 of the criteria in AF1 has been met. The pupil is working within the overall level, but there are significant areas that need to be developed further before secure performance at the level is demonstrated.
  • Secure – most of the criteria for the level are highlighted in each AF. The first 2 criteria in AF1 are met. There may be a few unmet criteria in other AFs, but the highlighting shows that the standard for the level has been substantially met across each of the assessment focuses.
  • High – the criteria for the level are highlighted across all, or almost all, the AFs, with some criteria in the level above being highlighted for some AFs. All criteria in AF1 are met

Assessment guideline sheets could be printed out for each student and highlighted in order to monitor progress.

KS3 Formative & Summative Assessment

KS3 Example Assessment Sheets

The files below are examples of assessment sheets that could be adapted for use at Key Stage 3 for formative and summative assessment.  Teachers could give a copy to pupils and use the document to help pupils with peer and self assessment. The document would help to ensure that pupils know where they are in their learning and how to improve.  The summative details on the teacher copy would transfer directly into a KS3 tracking system.

You will need to re-colour the table border to match your site colours.

  • Do a right hand mouse click and choose Table Properties
  • Click on border colour and use the eye dropper to select the light colour from your site colour scheme, choose ok
