Letter sent to schools

January 2011

In the light of the recent changes in government policy for education I would like to take the opportunity to provide an update regarding the Healthy Schools Programme in Hertfordshire.

It has been announced that the Healthy Schools Programme will continue within the context of the Coalition Government’s priorities.  The programme will move towards being school led from April 2011.  The delivery processes and online tools will be simplified in line with the Government’s commitment to reduce bureaucracy to schools.  The National Healthy Schools website will be centrally hosted from April 2011.

Participation in the Healthy Schools programme will be locally determined.  It will be based on local needs and priorities to support health improvement and the adoption of healthier behaviours in children and young people.  From April 2011 the local authority will formally recognise and acknowledge Healthy School status.  The local recognition of Healthy School status will ensure a smooth transition from national to more locally driven arrangements.  This will in turn lead to an even more engaging and effective programme which will continue to recognise and celebrate school achievements and outcomes for children and young people in relation to health and wellbeing.  The emphasis on a more locally driven model will also allow greater flexibility and opportunity for schools to focus on needs and priorities within their local community.

The Healthy Schools programme in Hertfordshire has been established for over 10 years and currently 99% of all schools are involved.  The authority is committed to the programme and schools will be able to continue to be part of the Hertfordshire Healthy Schools Programme.  The central government funding for the programme will end in March 2011.  This means that from April 2011 the programme will need to operate on a traded basis.  It is anticipated that there will be an annual subscription fee to the programme which will enable schools to access ongoing training and support.

Further details on this will be available shortly.
