Instrumental & Vocal Teaching Curriculum:
A Common Approach

Hertfordshire Music Service has been very closely associated with the development of A Common Approach, which is an instrumental/vocal curriculum put together at national level. It builds on the experience and expertise of a large number of teachers drawn, not only from Hertfordshire, but from all over the country.

A Common Approach was originally produced in 1998, and published by Faber Music Ltd. on behalf of the Federation of Music Services and the National Association of Music Educators. Its aim was that of raising the overall quality of teaching and learning by encouraging teachers to reflect on, develop and improve their own practice, and to adopt a more holistic approach to teaching and learning.

John Witchell, Head of Hertfordshire Music Service from 1992 to 2007 had, from the very outset, played a very active role in this project. In fact, he was Project Editor for the revised and expanded version that appeared in 2002. Consequently, instrumental and vocal teachers working for Hertfordshire Music Service are likely to be very familiar with the programmes of study contained within A Common Approach. Many regard it as a framework for their teaching as well as a general teaching resource.
