Stevenage 60th Anniversary Celebrations

Mayor, Simon Speller’s passion for music inspired him to bring together professional musicians and talented local people to provide a fantastic programme of musical events to celebrate Stevenage New Town’s 60th Anniversary. During October and November concerts and music workshops took place in churches, schools, sheltered housing as well as the Gordon Craig Theatre   Some were completely free and there was something to appeal to all ages.

The Music Service in partnership with the Borough Council and Stevenage Arts Guild town’s helped Stevenage celebrate this important birthday.

They enjoyed music from the Hertfordshire Brass quintet which included a fanfare for hosepipe specially composed for the event. Other schools were treated literally to a hands on workshop of Djembe drumming.  Joe Cooper from Hertfordshire Music Service took the pupils through their paces.  There were some sore hands afterwards.

On Sunday 26 November, Stevenage Wind Band and many local groups and school children joined together in the final event of the 60th birthday celebrations which took place in the Concert Hall in the Stevenage Leisure Centre.
