Early Years Music Activities

Music Centres around Hertfordshire are able to offer a wide range of activities for young children between the ages of 2 and 11. All are welcome to come and enjoy the activities on offer, under the guidance of expert and enthusiastic teachers.

The range of activities available may vary from centre to centre, but they all aim to provide a broad, balanced and lively courses , based on practical music making and with the emphasis on building a foundation for lifelong enjoyment of music.

Children aged 18 months – 5
Many music centres offer groups for very young children. They come to a weekly class with a parent or carer and enjoy the experience of making music through singing, playing and moving. The skills learnt prepare them for more formal musical learning at a later stage and also make a significant contribution to their readiness for learning in the school context.

Children aged 5-7
Many music centres offer groups for children aged from 5-7. Music making will be based on the kind of activities central to the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum for Music, but may place additional emphasis on the current and future need of children who are beginning or wanting to begin learning an instrument.

Children aged 7-11
Many music centres offer groups for children for 7-11. Music making will be based on the kind of activities central to the Key Stage 2 National curriculum for Music, but will also place special emphasis on the needs of current and future instrumentalists.

For many children, these groups will be the entry point to Music Centre activities. We aim to provide a relaxed and safe learning environment where friends can be made and confidence gained. There is an emphasis on working together, and new group members are always made welcome.
