Primary enrichment and extension projects for able, gifted and talented pupils

For the third year running, individual primary schools or networks/ clusters are invited to develop and run an enrichment/ extension project  that will target the needs of able, gifted and talented pupils. A small amount of funding is available for initiatives that may be either completely new or which build upon an existing strength in schools. Funding may be for a variety of purposes such as resources or to pay for an outside speaker/ input.

Requirements

  • The project can be run over one day or an extended period but must involve able, gifted and talented pupils from more than one school (ie the host school).
  • The project needs to be innovative, adding something new to learning and clearly enriching and/ or extending the learning of able, gifted and talented pupils.

·     The project must have clear outcomes and success criteria i.e. what will be the impact on the achievement of the pupils participating? I will be looking to build upon this year’s experience and to ensure that we have a tangible outcome from the scheme as a whole. Organisers will be required to produce an evaluation/ summary of the project upon its completion.

  • Projects should demonstrate an obvious need e.g. linking with the school development plan and be part of whole school able, gifted and talented provision.
  • Projects should be achievable and realistic over the time period – I am initially looking at the next two terms  but schools which ran a project this year may well like to consider developing it further and extending it beyond this academic year.

Examples of previous projects are listed on the gifted and talented page of the HGFL for your information, along with an electronic version of the application form for this year.

Schools may like to look at their existing subject strengths and level of expertise to determine the nature of any project proposal. Also significant will be resources available (e.g. ICT suite), any existing links that are in place (e.g. with local businesses) and working structures with other local schools (e.g. networks, clusters); it may be that a network or cluster wishes to apply for funding to run several events collaboratively – for example there are examples across the county of different themed activities being based at and rotating round each participating school every term or half term and this is an effective model of working. It is important that able, gifted and talented pupils from different schools are given the opportunity to meet and work together and therefore the initiative aims to support proposals to run projects which involve several schools. Also, projects which involve the wider community (examples from elsewhere have included such things as links with the local astronomy club) and an external input (eg from a Science Learning Centre or museum) may provide the exact and appropriate level of expertise which is required.
