  • use the resources in their settings
  • behave in particular (unknown) situations: role-play contexts–florists, garage, etc
  • tidy up when they have finished

However children learn through play, they will have preferences about how, where and what they wish to learn.

  • How do we support children in their child-initiated learning?
  • children playing Are the resources organised to enable children to make informed choices and to take responsibility for tidying away?
  • How are the practitioners deployed?
  • What systems are there in place to enable adults to monitor, observe and record play?
  • What is the role of the adult supporting the child-initiated learning?

Children need opportunities each day to learn through play (45mins -1 hour at a time)– uninterrupted child-initiated play. How do we ensure that they have the opportunity to select what they want to do and then have the time to explore what they have chosen (without interruption)?
