Nursery Learning Record

hexagon green smIn all Foundation Stage settings, Early Years practitioners begin to observe how children play, plan, learn and relate to others. Practitioners also assess what children know, understand and can do.

“From September 2002 schools and other settings are free to decide whether, where and when they need to make entry assessments”
QCA: Assessment and reporting arrangements Key stage 1 – 2003

The Nursery Learning Record is intended to be used by practitioners in gathering information and recording a child’s progress and development. It is intended for use as an initial assessment when a child enters a Nursery setting.

Early Years practitioners use this information to plan activities to take on a child’s learning. Therefore the NLR’s joint purpose is to create links between pupil attainment and planning for learning.

The NLR encourages practitioners to create an early opportunity for parents and carers to talk to staff and discuss and share information from the ongoing observations.

Nurseries participating in the process have the additional option of having the data from their findings processed by the LEA.

  • Does the NLR require practitioners to complete observations prior to make assessments?
  • Is the Nursery Learning Record statutory?
  • Can practitioners use their initial observations / assessments to accurately predict pupil attainment of the Early Learning Goals?
