The BME Achievement team is engaged in working with schools, parents and the community to raise educational achievement among black and minority ethnic (BME) pupils and to support equality issues in Hertfordshire schools. The team offers flexible support, guided by national research, to build capacity in schools in order to narrow the attainment gap of BME pupils.

Areas of expertise include:

Black and Minority Ethnic (BME)

Hertfordshire Advisers for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Achievement are highly experienced in promoting BME achievement and engaging with head-teachers, teachers, parents, pupils, governors, teaching assistants, other agencies and Local Authorities.

BME Achievement Advisers are able to provide high quality bespoke training and guidance to support a variety of school settings to narrow the gap in achievement and promote an inclusive ethos for Black and Minority Ethnic pupils. We work in partnership to identify, plan and deliver individualized support, which may include as:

  • black boy wearing glassesDevelopment of a socially and culturally diverse curriculum and environment
  • Strengthening of partnerships with BME communities and brokering culturally appropriate support and training
  • Facilitating pupil and parent voice
  • Identifying and engaging underachieving groups
  • Strengthening data analysis on BME pupils’ attainment
  • Preparing for and supporting new arrivals
  • Facilitation of family learning
  • Brokering learning mentoring
  • Key strategies for schools to promote equality of opportunity
  • Tailored programme to strengthen the self evaluation process to raise BME achievement including advanced learners of EAL
  • Coaching for teachers to develop strategies to engage underachieving pupils

We offer central and localized training e.g. clusters, tailored training for individual teachers, NQT’s, teaching assistants, leadership and management and briefings for SLT and governors.

Learning Mentors

The Hertfordshire Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Achievement Learning Mentoring Programme offers a comprehensive support programme for young people, delivered by highly skilled individuals to enable and empower young people to achieve their full potential academically, socially and emotionally. We are able to offer:

  • ethnic minority girl A learning mentor to support vulnerable pupils who have been identified by the school as likely to benefit from positive intervention
  • Focused support which is tailored to the needs of individual pupils in the context of the outcomes identified by their school
  • Regular (usually weekly) mentoring sessions for targeted young people
  • Supervision of the work by the BME adviser who will be your point of contact
  • Partnership work with mentees’ parents/carers and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Regular feedback and reporting to staff and meetings to review progress
  • A Handbook with guidance for mentors and school staff

 

The mentors’ work with all vulnerable pupils (one to one or in a group) involves:

  • Listening to the young person
  • Setting targets which focus on educational and personal goals
  • Support to achieve targets
  • Encouraging the young person to discuss their aspirations and goals#
  • Acting as a positive role model
  • Exploring solutions in order to maximize their potential
  • Providing support and information to enhance transition

 

In addition if required the mentors can work with staff on:

  • Cultural issues that affect learning
  • Peer mentoring programmes
  • Support for school events e.g. parent consultations/meetings
  • Pupil support plans e.g. CAF, PSP, IEP
  • CPD/briefings about their work e.g. needs of students, the role of the mentor

 

We describe mentoring as an adult forming a one to one relationship with a pupil to give advice, support and guidance in any area where the pupil may need help to achieve their full potential.
