Hertfordshire's Policy on Physical Intervention in Schools

Hertfordshire recognises the need for staff working in schools to use Restrictive Physical Intervention (RPI) in certain circumstances in order to minimise risk.  There is a legal right for school staff to use RPI.  However, this right needs to be exercised within a framework of good practice and in accordance with specific legal requirements.  This document is Hertfordshire’s policy about the use of RPI in schools:

CSF0178 Model Policy for Restrictive Physical Intervention In Schools

Every school should have its own policy about the use of RPI.  Given that school staff have a legal right to use RPI, every school should have its own policy about the use of RPI.  Here is a model policy that schools may adapt according to their particular circumstances:
