Y6/7 Moderation Clusters - Maths (Spring 2011)Please download the following suggested tasks to carry out with pupils before you come to the moderation cluster session. The tasks have been based on problems produced by the National Strategies, although the numbers have been changed, so pupils will not have solved these exact problems before, even if they have seen the original problems. It is suggested that you might initially use one of the problems and allow pupils to explore different ways of solving it, then discuss with the class the variety of different methods used, then ask pupils to attempt a different problem to see which methods they decide to use. Please focus on one or two particular pupils when they are working on the problems. Observe the way they approach the problems - discussions about the mathematics required, decisions made, choices of strategies, shortcuts spotted etc. Refer to the criteria from the APP guidelines or the Hertfordshire ‘Pink Book’ (official title ‘Teacher’s Handbook: Criteria to support planning and teacher assessment’) to identify which aspects of the level descriptors had been demonstrated by the pupils on this occasion (Ma1 and Ma2). Please then bring with you to the moderation session the following:
Tasks Kieron's Cats (adapted from problem produced by the National Strategies)
Daisy's Dogs (similar problem to above, but more difficult numbers)
Jane's Presents (adapted from problem produced by the National Strategies)
George's Presents (similar to above, but more difficult numbers)
