New Headteacher Induction Programme

The Hertfordshire induction programme for new headteachers is designed to assist the process of initiation to headship, introduce colleagues (where appropriate) to the Children's, Schools and Families service, and support colleagues in balancing the practical demands of their new role with personal leadership development.

Although there are some differences in the content and structure of the programmes for primary, special and secondary colleagues, the broad pattern is as follows.

Component parts:

  • A welcome document with some very practical information and contact points
  • An opportunity to work with a mentor colleague during the first year in post. Preparatory sessions for both mentors and new heads are arranged to clarify roles and expectations
  • An opportunity to conduct a needs analysis/audit
  • Ongoing support from the School Development Adviser
  • A programme of conference-style input
Handing Over Headship – A Toolkit for Schools

The toolkit is offered to schools as an example of best practice in ensuring the smooth handover from one headteacher to another and results from a research project undertaken in Hertfordshire LA during the spring and summer terms 2006. A full report on the project and its findings is available from the Local Authority.

Induction Programme Autumn Term 2008

The programme is designed around ‘The National Standards for Headteachers’. It is a comprehensive and cost effective package which we believe will support you as you start your headship and it represents good value for money at £500.
