Headteacher Professional Development Programme

In partnership with headteachers, Hertfordshire has run a successful headteacher conference programme for many years and this will continue.  However, effective professional development for headteachers goes beyond this and we aim to encourage and facilitate:

  • research (e.g. through NCSL or individual further degrees)
  • system leadership
  • School Improvement Partner training
  • opportunities to work beyond current school e.g. peer coaching, secondments
  • leadership of local collaboratives and federations of schools
  • National Leaders of Education programme (NCSL)
  • coaching

As increasing numbers of our current headteachers approach retirement age, we will seek ways in which their expertise can be retained in the county. We also wish to explore a range of models to support succession planning such as co-headship and peer coaching.
