New Headteacher Induction Programme

The Hertfordshire induction programme for new headteachers is designed to assist the process of initiation to headship, introduce colleagues (where appropriate) to Hertfordshire County Council Children's Services, and support colleagues in balancing the practical demands of their new role with personal leadership development.

Although there are some differences in the content and structure of the programmes for primary, special and secondary colleagues, the broad pattern is as follows.

Component parts:

  • A handover toolkit to help support the incoming head teacher
  • A welcome event with some very practical information and contact points
  • A significant number of Hertfordshire head teachers who are Professional Partners available to work with new heads
  • An induction programme of four and a half days plus network meetings (see below)
Handing Over Headship – A Toolkit for Schools

The toolkit is offered to schools as an example of best practice in ensuring the smooth handover from one headteacher to another and results from a research project undertaken in Hertfordshire LA during the spring and summer terms 2006.

For more information regarding the handover toolkit please contact Lin Lovett on phone: 01438 844854 or email linda.lovett@hertscc.gov.uk
