NGA Needs You!

In addition to our support role, we represent the governors’ view in national arenas and campaign on behalf of governors. In recent times, the campaigning role has taken on far greater importance! And we realise that the greater our membership, the louder will be our voice.

The service we provide consists of a regular journal (Governors’ News), which provides up-to-date information and examples of good practice together with opinion from both experts and members (sometimes one and the same). In addition, members receive a selection of ‘NGA Papers’, probably the most authoritative, but readable, set of documents on school governance. We also have a website:

We have a research facility which has produced eight research reports on topics such as governors’ responsibilities, teacher and parent governors and, in the pipeline, governor retention. Recently, we have added ‘Smartcards’ to our publication list. These are designed to be useful to all governors but we think they will be particularly helpful to governors, both new and experienced, whose background lies outside education.

NGA currently provides representation on national and local forums and we use response from our members to inform our thinking. But we are not reactive - we regularly take up, with decision-makers, issues of concern to governors.

If you join us, you will receive:

  • our journal, Governors' News, issued 5 times a year and containing up to date information and advice. Group members receive sufficient copies for every governor.
  • for individual members - five complimentary copies from our series of advice papers, (the NGA Papers). Group members receive ten different titles.
  • complimentary copies of NGA Papers when they are updated.

You will also have access to:

  • our website
  • reports from our research facility.

You can join as an individual governor or as a governing body. Membership for governing bodies can be paid for out of Standards Funds.
