What are Children Centres?

Children centres are based on the idea that providing high quality integrated services (health, education, family support and childcare) leads to positive outcomes for children, families and their communities. parent with child on his shoulder

So what is a children’s centre? It is a place in the local community offering access to services for 0 to 4 year olds including:

  • Good quality early years provision
  • Support for all children and their parents including children with additional needs and disabilities
  • Parent support including toy libraries, parent and toddler groups and parenting programmes
  • A base for a childminding network and / or child minding group
  • Effective links with Jobcentre Plus, local training, further and higher education providers
  • Services in local neighbourhoods and home visiting
  • Child and family health services including antenatal services
  • Local advice and information for parents

Sure Start Children’s Centres play an important role in bringing support services together and ensuring more joined up working between health, education and social care providers. Parents and carers are encouraged to get involved in the planning of services to meet the needs of their families.
