Social Care Out of Hours Service - Emergency Duty Team

Hertfordshire County Council provides an emergency social care service outside of office hours, to support adults and children who are at immediate risk of harm and/or urgently need help or advice.

Situations which may require urgent social care assistance include:

  • children at immediate risk of significant harm
  • mental health crises
  • emergency care for older people and people with learning disabilities.

During office hours, the appropriate district social care teams will deal directly with these cases.  Professionals who have concerns about significant harm, must make a referral as soon as possible when that concern becomes known; the greater the level of perceived risk, the more urgent the action should be.

Outside office hours, the Emergency Duty Team (EDT) provides a countywide response.  EDT opening times are 5.30pm Monday to Thursdays and 4.30pm on Fridays.  The team provides emergency social care cover every night (365 nights a year), all day at weekends and on all public holidays.  All team members are Approved Mental Health Professionals and Child Protection trained.

Professionals from agencies can alert EDT to possible emergency situations that may occur out of office hours by:

  • faxing a completed EDT alert form, available on the HGfL – fax 01992 641285
  • emailing a completed EDT alert form – email emergencydutyteam.edt@hertscc.gov.uk
  • phoning on the EDT direct line 0300 123 4042.
