School Workforce Development

The School Workforce Development (SWD) Team has a wealth of experience across a broad range of related school workforce issues including. It offers a strategic service to schools to attract, recruit and retain a high quality workforce. The team focuses on developing a coherent approach for schools in the areas of recruitment, retention, staff well-being, workforce remodelling, continuing professional development and performance management of the school. SWD also supports schools in the changing environment of remodelling and extending the school workforce.

Traded services

  • A range of courses and conferences held throughout the year, as advertised in the termly SSE CPD programme and on the Hertfordshire Grid for Learning website
  • The Well-Being Programme for Hertfordshire schools
  • Support for the induction of all NQTs including dedicated training programme
  • Individual support for schools with recruitment difficulties
  • Exit interviews service to inform schools’ recruitment and retention policies
  • NVQ Programmes for teaching and support staff in schools and other establishments

Centrally funded services

  •  Recruitment of teachers and support staff via attendance at recruitment fairs and special events
  • Promoting the recruitment of NQTs to Hertfordshire schools including managing of the database of NQTs and experienced teachers available to all schools via the
    teachinherts website
  • Quality control of supply teaching service via Eteach
    n Supporting exit surveys in schools and for the LA, providing data and trends for schools
  • SWD headteacher updates via briefings, newsletter etc
    n Hosting of a major annual teacher recruitment fair each January at which schools can exhibit and of regional open days to promote recruitment of support staff in schools
  • Working with schools and the University of Hertfordshire in the provision and development of the Graduate Teacher Programme
  • Providing housing advice and support to new teachers moving to Hertfordshire
  • Organising recruitment events / support to target shortage areas: e.g. shortage subjects, special schools, ethnic minorities

  • Return to teaching service with a club, courses and conferences

  • Monitoring and supporting NQTs at risk of failure and administering the statutory programme on behalf of all schools
