Playing for SuccessPlaying for Success (PfS) is a DCSF (formerly DfES) funded national initiative which uses sport to motivate young people to become successful learners. The purpose of the project is to use the environment and medium of football as a motivational tool in order to raise literacy, numeracy and ICT achievement. Since starting in November 2000 as the 23rd national PfS project, more
than 1300 pupils and 45
Hertfordshire schools have benefited from the scheme at Watford Football
Club. There are more than 150 centres nationwide. A second centre developed in association with Hithcen Town Football club, based at their Baldock Training Ground, opened in May 2007 and successfully PfS is available to schools who can arrange for students aged between 10-14 years to follow a voluntary after-school 10 week programme, experiencing 20 hours of literacy, numeracy and ICT study support. The Watford Football Club Double Club pilot is running in Cavendish, Adeyfield, Nicholas Breakspear and Francis Combe this year. Year 7/8 students are released to attend additional curriculum time for literacy, numeracy and PE football themed lessons one day a week in Watford Football Club branded classrooms within their schools.
