The Hertfordshire Grid for Learning (HGfL)

The HGfL was established in 1998 as a network which supplies all Hertfordshire local authority schools with safe access to the internet as well as email and other online services to enhance
learning, teaching and school effectiveness.

The HGfL has continued to develop to keep pace with the needs of schools. Currently all schools and residential children's homes are connected by broadband.

Traded services

  • A range of courses held throughout the year, as advertised in the termly SSE CPD programme and on the Hertfordshire Grid for Learning website

Centrally funded services

  • Safe access to the Internet (inappropriate materials on the Internet are blocked)
  • An e-mail service appropriate for schools which they can manage themselves and which incorporates safety and accessibility features when used with children
  • Access to the HGfL website which contains thousands of pages written specifically to support learning and teaching in Hertfordshire schools
  • The Hertfordshire Learning Platform which provides, anywhere, anytime access to collaboration and communication tools and to assessment, attendance and other datat from school MIS systems.
  • Space to develop schools’ own websites together with telephone and onsite support for website development
  • Access to a ‘freephone’ helpdesk to report any faults or issues with these services
  • A range of other connectivity services for schools with more complex requirements
