Schools Energy at Easter March 2013

Easter comes towards the end of the heating cycle; however having just seen the weather forecast it may be as cold as Christmas. Good management of your schools energy use during Easter will deliver savings and help you establish your baseline.

Remember the clocks move forward one hour on Easter day so make sure your energy controls reflect that change

Heating Actions

To drive down your heating costs during Easter the following actions could help:

  • Ensure that timing controls are set to reflect the school shutdown.
  • Make sure frost settings are set to the correct temperature.
  • Make sure internal set-points do not demand extra energy use.
  • Ensure all internal radiators are set to frost protection only
  • Don’t heat the whole school if you pop in during the Easter Holidays.

Warning:
ONLY ADJUST YOUR HEATING IF YOU KNOW YOUR HEATING PLANT AND BOILER HAVE BEEN SERVICED AND ARE WORKING EFFICIENTLY. PLEASE DO NOT JEOPARDISE YOUR SCHOOLS INFRASTRUCTURE TO SAVE ENERGY

Reduce Electricity Consumption - Free Lighting Surveys Available Jan 2013

Analysis of electricity consumption across the school estate shows that many schools could benefit from an upgrade to their lighting system. HCC has the means and the money to make this happen. Lighting in schools probably accounts for up to 50% of the electrical energy used in a normal school-day.

If your electricity consumption is three times or more on a school day compared to that consumed at a weekend or holiday, the opportunity exists to reduce your total electricity consumption by up to 25%.

At the very least you can have a full lighting survey completed free of charge to identify the potential for savings.

Currently HCC has an interest free loan fund, The Salix Fund, which will pay for the upgrade to be installed without any capital requirement from the school. The first loan repayment will not be due until March 2014. The deadline for forms to be returned is by March 31 2013. The normal return on investment is circa three years. Loans will only be awarded if the efficiencies within the proposal meet the criteria of the fund which are there to protect schools.

The Salix Loan fund consists of 50% contribution from central government and 50% contribution from HCC. The fund is revolving so between 25-40% is invested each year in energy efficient interventions. The cost savings from the reduction in energy consumption are recycled into the fund until the cost of the installation is met. After the payback is complete the school can use the savings on other frontline services.

The upgrade is a simple intervention that allows the most efficient fluorescent lamps to be installed into existing fittings. It is non intrusive and can be completed at times to suit the school. Typically an upgrade at a primary school takes 7-8 hours, which can be done at a time to suit the school including evenings. The upgrade comes with a five year warranty that includes replacement tubes and an annual service visit.

Christmas  Energy Consumption Jan 2013

Prior to Christmas schools were informed of actions they could take to reduce their costs associated with heating, and to aim to see how low they could go.

Preliminary analysis of schools within the Hertfordshire estate shows that over 220 have made significant savings to their heating costs by ensuring their management system was set up for Christmas week.

These 220 schools lowered their normal gas consumption significantly by ensuring they had programmed the holiday period correctly into their controller. Typically the average savings were several thousand kWh leading to cost savings in excess of £100.

Modern electronic controllers can be installed for circa £3000 and have a return on investment of under 3 years. Salix funding is for community schools for this upgrade.

The analysis also highlighted that there are many schools that are in full control of their heating, with weekly profiles that show controllers are set up not to deliver heat at weekends.; however many of these schools showed normal energy consumption on Christmas Day.

If your school was one of those with normal consumption for Christmas Day then another opportunity is fast approaching to save heat energy with the February half term on the horizon.

If you have AMR or optimal fitted you should be in the position to monitor energy use on a regular basis and identify any anomalies. Full instructions on the sign in procedure and what to look for are on the live energy monitoring tab.

Save Money: Manage Your Heating Oct 2012

Now that Autumn is truly upon us schools’ energy use will rise significantly as heating is switched on.  Good management of your schools heating systems can save money and lower its carbon footprint. If your heating is on for a day when it is not needed you could save anything from £30 upwards.

Regular interrogation of automatic meter readers enables anomalies to be identified, rectified and therefore leads to a reduction in energy consumption and costs. Monitoring will show if your automatic sensors are facilitating good heat management or simply wasting energy.

Electronic controllers allow you to manage heating so that it corresponds with the school day. This means your heating can make sure the desired temperature is reached at the start of school, with another burst mid morning and a third after lunch to maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the day. Instead of one continuous heating period which often leads to heat being wasted at break and lunch times.

See the potential savings available by looking at the case studies on the Grid.

Brooklands School example shows what could happen by improved heating management at weekends:

or how minor changes to daily temperature and timing controls can lead to major savings over a school year.
