Social Services Inspectorate Report on Child ProtectionPress release - 1.4.04Hertfordshire County Council has put together an action plan in response to a report into its child protection service from the Social Services Inspectorate. The Inspectorate’s full report and the council’s action plan are going to a special Cabinet meeting on April 1, 2004. John Harris, Director of Children, Schools and Families, said: “ We welcome this report and accept all of its findings. It’s tough but provides us with a firm starting point from which to improve our services for vulnerable children. “The inspectors were concerned that, although there is some very good work in the service, there was also some practice which was not of a high enough standard. I want to support and develop staff, so that we can achieve a consistently high standard of work throughout the service. “Everyone in the department is working together to make sure we approach this work in a methodical and thorough way. “There is no quick fix when it comes to long-term problems like recruitment, and the report acknowledges that we have worked very hard to address staff shortages, but that is still a problem. However there are things which we can do immediately and work has already begun in covering every aspect of this report.” “The good news is that inspectors say in the report that they ‘are confident that Hertfordshire has the capacity, determination and proven record to tackle the range of challenges ahead.'
