The Hertfordshire Observatory
School Data Requirements - help is at hand at the Hertfordshire
Observatory
The Hertfordshire Observatory offers information on a range of demographic
issues allowing its users to get a better understanding not just of the
county as a whole, but also of their specific area. Amongst the 1000+
resources available on the Observatory, you can find indices of deprivation
and demographic data. We’re adding new resources all the time.
Some examples of areas the Observatory may be able to help schools with
are:
- School Self Evaluation
As part of school self-evaluation, schools need to be able
to judge how well they are doing. This isn’t simply about
the number of qualifications with which pupils leave the school,
but should also demonstrate how success is translating into benefits
for the community. The local-level data on the Observatory will
help give schools a clear understanding of their impact on the community.
- School Profiles
Now that there is no longer an obligation on school governing bodies to produce
an annual report, the onus is on schools to produce a school profile. Apart
from the various different datasets that are already populated on the report
by DfES, schools need to provide information on how well they are working
within their communities. The Observatory contains data that could support
schools in producing a profile.
- Curriculum Subjects
The Observatory also offers data sets and resources which can
be used by teachers and pupils in a range of curriculum subjects such
as geography, citizenship, maths, science and R.E.
